UN Security Council Sanctions Committee Delegation Visits Mutobo Demobilisation Centre
Yesterday, 24 November 2024, Amb. Michael Imran Kanu, Chair of the United Nations Security Council Sanctions Committee, led a delegation on an official visit to the Mutobo Demobilisation Centre in Musanze District.
Hosted by Hon. Nyirahabineza Valerie, Chairperson of the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission (RDRC), alongside RDRC Commissioners, the delegation gained insights into Rwanda’s innovative efforts to reintegrate ex-combatants, a critical contribution to fostering peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
During their visit, the delegation lauded Rwanda’s Demobilisation and Reintegration Programme, which provides safe shelter and holistic support to repatriated members of ex-armed groups and their dependents. They highlighted Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to its open-door policy, encouraging ex-armed group members still in the Democratic Republic of Congo to voluntarily return for reintegration into society.
The visit included interactive sessions, where the delegation engaged in productive Q&A discussions with RDRC Commissioners, deepening their understanding of Rwanda’s approach to reconciliation and peacebuilding as well as some testimonies of those who have been reintegrated.
The UN delegation commended Rwanda’s efforts as a model for sustainable peace in the region, reinforcing international cooperation to address conflict resolution and reintegration challenges.
