SOAS University of London Students Visit Mutobo Demobilisation Centre
Twenty-eight students and three professors from SOAS, University of London, today visited the Mutobo Demobilisation Centre to gain insight into regional dynamics and the role of demobilisation and reintegration in advancing peacebuilding and stabilisation across the Great Lakes region.
Upon arrival, the delegation was received by the Vice Chairperson of the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission, Maj Gen (Rtd) Jacques Nziza, who briefed them on the Commission’s mandate and ongoing efforts to support the transition of former combatants into civilian life.
The visit included an interactive session during which students engaged directly with recently repatriated former members of the FDLR, who had returned from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The exchange provided first-hand perspectives on the challenges and opportunities associated with reintegration.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Professor Phil Clark commended the Commission’s work, noting:
“The staff and students of SOAS University of London are grateful for the opportunity to learn more about your vital work at this critical time in the region. We wish you well in your endeavours to promote peace and reconciliation, and to support former fighters in building new and productive lives.”
