RDRC Receives Mobility Equipment for Disabled Ex-Combatants
Kigali, Rwanda – July 5, 2024 – The Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) has received a generous donation of mobility equipment to support disabled ex-combatants. The handover ceremony took place in Kicukiro District’s Nyarugunga Sector, marking a significant step towards improving the lives of those who served the nation.
The equipment, provided by the Umbrella of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities in the Fight against HIV&AIDS and for Health Promotion (UPHLS), includes 8 wheelchairs, 50 pairs of crutches, and 20 white canes. The donation was led by UPHLS Executive Director, Karangwa Francois Xavier, and member Mugabo Bob Emmanuel.
Hon. Nyirahabineza Valerie, Chairperson of RDRC, received the equipment alongside Commissioner Brig. Gen. Bagabo John, Commissioner Dancilla Nyirarugero, and the staff of the Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU).
"This generous donation marks the beginning of a strong collaboration between UPHLS and RDRC in supporting our former freedom fighters," said Hon. Nyirahabineza Valerie. "It is not only about providing equipment but also about building their social and economic capacities."
Karangwa Francois Xavier, Executive Director of UPHLS, added, "This is a promising start. We look forward to a fruitful partnership with RDRC to support disabled ex-combatants."
The Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU) will determine the distribution of the equipment based on the urgency of need. Both RDRC and UPHLS are considering drafting a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) to solidify this partnership.
The Umbrella of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities in the fight against HIV&AIDS and for Health Promotion (UPHLS) is a non-governmental entity operating in Rwanda that was created in 2006 as an Umbrella Organization of Disability Organizations and grassroots’ self-help groups of persons with disabilities.
