RDRC Commissioners Tour Southern Province, Renewing Commitment to Reintegration

Southern Province, Rwanda – 27 August 2025 – The Council of Commissioners of the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) has concluded a two-day working visit to Southern Province, engaging leaders and beneficiaries in discussions that placed reintegration and dignity at the centre of the agenda.

The delegation, led by RDRC President Hon. Valérie Nyirahabineza, was warmly received in Nyanza by Provincial Executive Secretary Mr. Vedaste Nshimiyimana, accompanied by members of the Provincial Security Council. Talks focused on strengthening collaboration to improve the wellbeing of ex-combatants transitioning into civilian life.

Shared Vision for Lasting Peace

In their meetings, Commissioners and local leaders explored practical strategies to support sustainable reintegration and reinforce community resilience across the province. Both sides pledged to work hand in glove to resolve persistent challenges affecting ex-combatants.

Taba Model Village: Restoring Dignity

During the mission, the Commissioners visited Taba Village in Mukura Sector, Huye District—home to ex-combatants wounded during the liberation struggle. The model settlement, built with government support, stands as a testament to Rwanda’s vision of inclusive development.

Residents spoke with heartfelt gratitude.

“My life had lost direction, but it has been transformed,” said Jean Nkurikiyinka, who lives in Taba with his wife and seven children. “I thank His Excellency the President of the Republic and the RDRC leadership who stand by us every day. Today, my family enjoys peace and security in a decent home.”

In Taba alone, the RDRC has built houses for 11 families of disabled ex-combatants. Today, they live with renewed dignity and hope for the future.

Collaboration with Districts

The Commissioners also engaged with district leaders across Southern Province, including in Nyaruguru, where they participated in an extended District Security Council meeting. Discussions centred on strengthening partnerships, enhancing welfare support, and identifying durable solutions to issues raised by beneficiaries.

The RDRC commended Nyaruguru leaders for their commitment, noting that their hands-on approach exemplifies the spirit of inclusive governance that underpins Rwanda’s stability.

A Renewed Pledge

Throughout the visit, Commissioners and local leaders made clear that reintegration is more than a process—it is a promise. By listening directly to beneficiaries, addressing their concerns, and ensuring access to government programmes, the RDRC reaffirmed its mission: to restore dignity, promote peace, and strengthen unity.
