Ngororero Hosts Dialogue on Reintegration, Livelihoods of ex combatants
Ngororero District today convened a wide-ranging dialogue aimed at strengthening the social and economic reintegration of former members of the FDLR who have returned from the jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo, alongside ex-members of Rwanda’s national armed forces now living in civilian life. The meeting was jointly organised by the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) and the District leadership, bringing together security officials, private sector actors and faith leaders.
At the heart of the discussions were practical pathways to sustainable livelihoods, community inclusion and renewed hope. Participants explored ways to support returnees to become self-reliant, deepen their integration within host communities and continue encouraging those still in the DR Congo jungles to return home voluntarily and peacefully. The dialogue drew more than 150 participants, reflecting broad local commitment to peacebuilding and recovery.
Addressing the meeting, RDRC Vice Chairperson Maj Gen (Rtd) Jacques Nziza underscored the importance of partnership. He emphasised that lasting reintegration depends on close collaboration between district authorities, the Commission, the private sector and other partners to improve the wellbeing of former combatants within their families and communities. He also urged ex-soldiers to uphold positive values, embrace productive work and strengthen unity and cooperation with fellow citizens.
Ngororero District Mayor Christophe Nkusi highlighted the forum as a rare and valuable opportunity for returnees and former soldiers to engage directly with leaders. He noted that concrete measures have been agreed to jointly pursue improved social welfare and economic opportunities, reinforcing the district’s commitment to inclusive development and social cohesion.
The voice of beneficiaries was also heard. CPL Mujawayezu Laurence, a former FDLR combatant, called for the dialogue to be held quarterly, saying such engagements restore confidence and renew purpose among members of the reserve force. He added that the meeting had energised participants to intensify outreach to those still in the Congo forests, reassuring them that Rwanda is peaceful and ready to welcome them home.
