Mutobo Technical Secondary School: Empowering Through Skills
Mutobo Technical Secondary School stands quietly in the rolling hills of Gataraga Sector, Musanze District, but its impact echoes far beyond its location. Since opening in 2019, the school has offered more than just an education—it has given its students a second chance. Established through a partnership between the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) and Rwanda Polytechnic, now the Rwanda Technical and Vocational Education and Training Board (RTB), the institution was designed to equip both young people and ex-combatants with practical skills to help them build sustainable future.
The idea behind Mutobo was born from a realization: reintegration programs alone weren’t enough. Many former combatants left rehabilitation with some basic skills, but not enough to secure lasting employment or start their own businesses. The school was created to fill that gap, offering structured vocational training that provides a clear path to economic independence.
Today, Mutobo Technical Secondary School is home to 306 students. The diverse group includes former combatants rebuilding their lives and young people from surrounding communities like Gataraga and Busogo sectors. The school does not limit admission based on background—anyone eager to learn a trade is welcome.
The training programs are designed with the job market in mind, ensuring that graduates leave with skills that meet industry demands. Students can enroll in long-term courses in agriculture, building construction, or fashion design, all offered at Levels 3 to 5. For those looking for faster entry into the workforce, the school runs shorter, Level 1 courses in fields such as electricity, masonry, welding, tailoring, hairdressing, plumbing, and automobile repair. These practical skills prepare students to either find employment quickly or start their own small businesses.
The school’s 26-member staff, led by Principal TEGEREZA Justin, has made it a priority to maintain high standards in vocational education. Their vision is clear: to make Mutobo a leading center for technical training not only in Rwanda but across the Great Lakes region. That commitment is already showing results.
In 2024, the school expanded its programs, introducing new Level 3 courses in agriculture, construction, and fashion design. The goal was to respond to the evolving needs of the job market, ensuring that graduates remain competitive. Many former students have already found success, securing jobs with major companies such as REG Musanze, AQUA Virunga, and GASABO 3D.
For those who pass through its doors, Mutobo Technical Secondary School is more than a place to learn—it is a stepping stone to self-reliance. Whether it’s a young person learning a trade for the first time or an ex-combatant seeking to rebuild, the school is proving that with the right skills, a fresh start is always possible.
