Mutobo Early Childhood Development Centre: A New Beginning for Mothers and Children Recovering from the Trauma of Armed Groups
Some life stories reveal the devastating human cost of armed conflict, yet they also demonstrate the power of hope, resilience and a fresh start. This is the story of Private Mahirwe ZABAYO, a Rwandan national who recently returned home after years of living under the control of the FDLR armed group in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Born in the DRC in 2006, Mahirwe grew up in an environment dominated by the FDLR. While still very young, she endured severe abuse that left deep emotional scars. She recalls that both she and her family were subjected to horrific violence, during which her mother and younger sibling were later killed by members of the armed group.
"We eventually heard that Rwanda was peaceful. We decided to escape during the night and reached MONUSCO, which facilitated our return home to Rwanda," she recalls.
Upon arriving at the Mutobo Demobilisation Centre, Mahirwe says she was warmly received and provided with essential support, including accommodation, food, clothing, healthcare and psychosocial assistance to help rebuild her life.
Today, she is among the beneficiaries receiving rehabilitation and training at Mutobo. She particularly welcomes the official inauguration of the Mutobo Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre on 3 July 2026, describing it as a vital investment in the future of children, especially those born as a result of conflict-related sexual violence while their mothers were living in the forests of the DRC.
Mahirwe also has a message for Rwandans who remain with armed groups across the border.
"I encourage every Rwandan still living in the forests to make the courageous decision to return home. In Rwanda, we have been welcomed with dignity and given the opportunity to rebuild our lives and secure a better future for our children."
Mahirwe's story reflects the importance of peace, rehabilitation and reintegration, demonstrating how compassion and sustained support can restore hope and create new opportunities for the next generation.
