JICA and RDRC Empower Female Ex-Combatants and spouses of ex-combatants with Sewing Skills

On Friday, 13 December 2024, the JICA Alumni Association of Rwanda (JAAR), in collaboration with the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) and with support from JICA, officially concluded a week-long sewing skills training programme in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province. This initiative targeted 25 female ex-combatants and wives of disabled ex-combatants, equipping them with practical tailoring skills to enhance their socio-economic well-being.

The training, which began on 9 December, focused on fostering financial independence by providing participants with skills essential for job creation and entrepreneurship. During the closing ceremony, each beneficiary received a sewing machine, symbolising the beginning of their journey towards self-reliance.

“This programme provides the tools and skills needed for job creation, ensuring these women can contribute meaningfully to their families and communities,” said Hon. NYIRAHABINEZA Valerie, Chairperson of the RDRC.

She added that the initiative reflects RDRC’s broader goals of reintegration and empowerment, aligning with its commitment to sustainable development for ex-combatants and their families. By extending such opportunities, the programme emphasises inclusivity and the importance of equipping vulnerable groups with practical skills.

The event was officiated by Hon. NYIRAHABINEZA Valerie and JICA Rwanda Country Representative KIMURA Makiko, who highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts. “This partnership highlights the power of shared knowledge and resources,” noted KIMURA Makiko. “We are committed to empowering women and fostering development through practical skills and opportunities.”

The week-long training and its conclusion underscore the dedication of JICA, RDRC to bringing impactful programmes to local communities across Rwanda. Beneficiaries like INGABIRE Anitha expressed optimism about the future: “We’ve gained valuable tailoring skills, and we’re ready to put them to use. We plan to form a cooperative to work together and improve our families’ welfare.”

By targeting female ex-combatants and wives of disabled ex combatants, this programme not only empowers individuals but also strengthens the social fabric of their communities through Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Programme.
