Former members of armed groups to join RDRC Officials and Staff in marking the 32nd Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

Kigali, 12 May 2026 — As part of the ongoing 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi during the 100 days of remembrance in Rwanda, Officials and staff members of the Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) will, on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, be joined by 267 ex members of Armed Groups (Ex-AGs) recently repatriated from armed groups operating in the jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly the FDLR, in commemorating the Genocide against the Tutsi at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, followed by a visit to the Campaign Against Genocide Museum.

These former members of armed groups are currently undergoing a deradicalization, rehabilitation, and civic education programme at the Mutobo Demobilization Centre located in Musanze District, Northern Province. Most of them are young people who had long been exposed to misinformation and genocide ideology while living within armed groups in eastern DRC.

This commemoration activity has been organized as part of RDRC’s ongoing efforts to sensitize former members of armed groups repatriated from the DRC to fight against genocide ideology, support returnees in joining all Rwandans in honoring the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi, and help them understand the true history of Rwanda by distinguishing it from the false narratives they had previously been taught.

As part of the programme, participants will visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where they will pay tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. They will later proceed to the Campaign Against Genocide Museum at the Parliament of Rwanda to deepen their understanding of the liberation struggle that stopped the genocide and restored national unity.

The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, followed by a visit to the Campaign Against Genocide Museum at the Parliament of Rwanda from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. After the tour, the former members of armed groups will return to the Mutobo Demobilization Centre to continue their Pre-Discharge Orientation Programme (PDOP).

RDRC emphasizes that such initiatives play a vital role in promoting national unity, reconciliation, and historical awareness among former members of armed groups, while strengthening their contribution to peace and security in Rwanda and across the region.

In March 2026, more than 240 beneficiaries from another intake also visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum. This marks the second such educational and commemorative visit organized this year.
